The Academic Skills Unit (ASU) provides a wide variety of academic support to undergraduate and postgraduate research students. This support is designed to develop the many skills needed by research students at the University of Melbourne. As Senior Advisors in the ASU, Dr Elizabeth Colbert and Guido Ernst co-ordinate a broad range of programs designed to assist student learning. These programs include academic and thesis writing, research and referencing skills, developing and constructing an academic argument, presenting an academic paper and English for Academic Purposes for ESL students. These programs are designed to meet the needs of local and international research students across all disciplines. In their talk, "What is it like to be a research student at the University of Melbourne?", Elizabeth and Guido will discuss what is expected of research students in Australia, how students can prepare for their studies in Melbourne before their departure and give tips on how to make the most of their studies after arrival.
